Minecraft Forge is recommended for installing mods for the Java version. Mods must be located in the "Mods" folder of Minecraft to be installed. You can find it under the following path:

Linux: ~/.minecraft/mods
Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/mods

If you can't find the folder there, create a folder called "mods" under ".minecraft".

The installation with Minecraft Forge

Minecraft Forge is a program library for Minecraft that comes with many interfaces for development. The program includes a modloader, which is used to load almost all mods into the game. To do this, go to Minecraftforge.net, select your version on the left and choose the installer at "Download Recommended", as shown in the screenshot below.

Wait six seconds, click "skip" at the top right and save the file. Open it, select "Install client" and "OK". Then launch the Minecraft Launcher, select the "installations" tab and click "forge". Check that you have the correct version and select "Build" or "Save" at the bottom right. If you now put a mod in the mod folder, Forge will install it automatically when you start the game.
