Halo Infinite: When is the co-op mode for the campaign coming?

Finally Halo in pairs again? Still a little patience! In this guide to Halo Infinite you will learn:

  • When the co-op mode for the campaign should start
  • Why multiplayer is not yet in the game
  • Which other announced features will also launch later

Halo Infinite: No co-op at launch - when will that change?

From the beginning, the Halo series was a co-op pleasure: Fighting the alien threat as a Master Chief duo has been a guarantee of fun for over two decades. The news that Halo Infinite will be released in December without multiplayer in the campaign was all the more disappointing in 2021. However, the Microsoft studio responsible, 343 Industries, has firmly promised to deliver the function later.

There is currently no fixed date for this, but there is a concrete clue: The co-op launch for the campaign is planned for the start of Season 2 of the Halo Infinite multiplayer. Since Season 1 currently ends on May 2, 2022, this could be the earliest date for the update that will finally allow two players to race around the Halo ring again. It is possible that the co-op function will also work with up to four people in a team - we are still waiting for more detailed information.

Will Halo Infinite also have splitscreen for the campaign?

It is very likely that Halo Infinite will offer split-screen multiplayer for cozy shooter rounds on the split screen after the co-op update, at least on Xbox consoles and maybe also on PC. The reason for the assumption: It already works via a glitch, but it is not recommended. The feature is only rudimentary, the second person has no HUD, for example, and you can't play story missions.

Most importantly, there is an acute risk that your saves will be destroyed or deleted by exploiting the bug and the game will crash. We strongly recommend waiting a few months for the official release, which will bring the online co-op feature into play alongside the presumed split-screen mode.

For the sake of completeness, you can still find the instructions for exploiting the glitch here - at your own risk

  • Set your Xbox to offline mode.
  • Connect a second controller to the console
  • Start Halo Infinite in campaign mode.
  • Press Start on controller 1, then Back.
  • Press Start on Controller 2 and log into a second Xbox account.
  • Add the second Xbox account to the party.

You can now play a very rudimentary splitscreen mode in the world of Halo Infinite. However, we once again issue a warning here that this method can severely damage and destroy your game saves.

This is why the co-op campaign is coming later

The development of Halo Infinite was turbulent at times. Key personnel quit while working on the sixth Halo installment, the first gameplay demo fell short of many fans' expectations, plus the challenges of the Corona Pandemic. The originally planned release as a launch title for the Xbox Series X in 2020 was ultimately postponed until late 2021.

Like any game development, Halo Infinite had to set priorities and, in some cases, redistribute them. In the course of this, the team decided to remove the co-op mode from the release version and bring it into the game as an update afterwards, in order to polish other aspects more thoroughly instead.

Halo Infnite: This popular feature is also coming later

In addition to the co-op mode, the Forge mode was also missing from the release of Halo Infinite. The popular map and game mode editor was also prioritized to the back, so that the launch version could appear in a more polished state. However, 343 Industries is expected to deliver it later: At the start of Season 3 of the multiplayer, the feature should appear according to the current status - so probably around August 2022 at the earliest.
