Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer: Info on Coop, Gameplay & Release

In our Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer guide you will learn:

  • What is known about the Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer release
  • Whether there will be a co-op mode in Cyberpunk 2077
  • What news there is about gameplay and crossplay

Cyberpunk 2077 was released at the end of 2020 as a pure single-player role-playing game. Since then, rumors and speculations about a possible multiplayer release of the role-playing game have been circulating. The - partly contradictory - statements of the development team raised more questions than they answered.

That's why we've compiled the latest information and told you what the situation is regarding the multiplayer release of Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer release: What do the developers say?

Even before the release of Cyberpunk 2077, the rumor mill was bubbling. CD Projekt Red CEO Adam Kiciński announced at the end of November 2020 that there would be no classic multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077. Instead, the studio was working on a standalone AAA title à la GTA Online or Red Dead Online, which would focus exclusively on the multiplayer experience.

However, hopes for a "Cyberpunk 2077 Online" died at the latest with the developer team's latest strategy update at the end of March 2021. Via Youtube, Kiciński corrected his statement and clarified that CD Projekt Red is not working on releasing the next game as a pure online experience. Instead, the existing single-player games are to be improved with online experiences.

Consequently, there is no official release date for Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer, nor is it known if and in what form such a mode will be released. Since the developers are currently working on the NextGen patches for Cyberpunk 2077 as well as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we will probably have to be patient for a while longer.

Rumor mill: Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay, co-op and crossplay

Furthermore, based on the latest information, it seems almost impossible that a co-op mode will appear for Cyberpunk 2077. Regardless of that, the structure of the single-player campaign is poorly suited for a multiplayer mode anyway.

Since your behavior influences the course of the game and nobody knows exactly which decisions have an effect at which point, it will be difficult to design the campaign in such a way that you can play it with your friends in co-op.

However, it's not impossible that Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay will be expanded with new features in the upcoming patches. In an earlier quarterly report, microtransactions were already announced for Cyberpunk 2077. What exactly is meant by this and whether the developers - despite the strategy update - will continue to rely on the use of real money in Cyberpunk 2077 remains to be seen for now.

Furthermore, dataminers have spotted a number of code snippets that hint at the possibility of new gameplay mechanics. For one, some code snippets suggested the existence of a deathmatch mode in Cyberpunk 2077. On the other hand, hints of heists were discovered in the code of the role-playing game. However, based on the recent announcements, it seems unlikely that the multiplayer modes will actually make it into the game.

The same applies to Cyberpunk 2077 crossplay. Currently, CD Projekt Red is still struggling with countless bugs and performance problems, especially on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Consequently, it is also unlikely that a unified version of the role-playing game will be released that you can play with your friends across platforms.
