GTA Online & GTA 5: Crossplay on PS4, PS5, PC & Xbox - the current status

You're here because you want crossplay in GTA Online? Let's make it short: At the moment, it doesn't look good. Cross-platform play between PlayStation, Xbox and PC is currently not possible in GTA 5's multiplayer mode. But you can read more in this guide:

  • What are the chances that the feature will be delivered later?
  • When it could be so far
  • What PS5 and Xbox Series X/S have to do with it

Crossplay in GTA Online: Often desired, not there yet

GTA5 may have a lot to offer, but when it comes to cross-platform functionality, Rockstar Games' open-world epic unfortunately leaves a lot to be desired. Not only is there no cross-play between consoles and PC or between consoles. Cross-progression (a.k.a. cross-save) is also not offered - so you can't start a save on one platform and then continue playing on another.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that cross-play and cross-save will be included in the game in the future. Rockstar Games doesn't seem to put much focus on the feature in general, as the online mode of Red Dead Redemption 2 also shows: Here, players of all platforms also remain completely among themselves. GTA 5 is also a popular modding playground on the PC. Combining this with the unchangeable console versions could cause compatibility problems.

Last cross-play hope PS5 release?

In the second half of 2021, GTA 5 and GTA Online are supposed to be released as optimized versions on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. If Rockstar Games ever does introduce crossplay, that would probably be the last realistic chance. So far, however, it is not even clear whether there will be cross-generational play then - that is, whether owners of an Xbox Series X or S will be able to play together with players on Xbox One, or PS5 players with owners of a PS4.

At the moment, cross-generation play is still possible between old and new PlayStation, as well as old and new Xbox. However, this is mainly because only the last-gen version of GTA Online runs via backwards compatibility on the next-gen consoles. How compatible the new and old version will be after the next-gen release remains to be seen.

Unfortunately, there are dark forebodings here as well: GTA 5 on PS3 and Xbox 360 was also once not cross-play compatible with GTA 5 in the later released version for PS4 and Xbox One. However, a lot has happened since then and crossplay and cross-save are much more widespread today. So there is still a bit of hope!
