Monster Hunter Rise: Advantages and disadvantages of the hammer

In Monster Hunter Rise, the power of the hammer truly lies in its tranquility. The weapon is one of the slowest in the entire game - but the damage is correspondingly great when the monster is hit properly. You'll have to choose your attacks wisely, because it takes a while to execute them. You can't use the hammer for quick combinations, and you can't block with it either. Instead, the roll is one of your most important moves when playing with this weapon. This is because your character performs them directly.

How to control the hammer

Here is an overview of the most important attacks and their buttons. They belong to the basics when you play with the hammer.

Charging: Hold ZR and the hammer will charge. This costs stamina, but increases your strength and thus the damage you do. There are three levels:

  1. A swinging blow from right to left.
  2. A strike from the bottom to the top.
  3. You powerfully gain momentum with a rotating motion and then strike.

Charge Change: While charging your weapon with ZR, press A to change the charge. You can switch between yellow and purple. Depending on the charge, your attacks will differ minimally in execution.

Use combos and increase damage

If you choose to use the hammer in Monster Hunter Rise, there are four different combos that you should be good at.

For a simple combo, the sequence is: Overhead Strike (X) > Overhead Strike II (X) > Uppercut (X)

For a charged side slash combo, press: Charged Side Slash (ZR and release while charging) > Charged Additional Attack (X) > Overhead Slash I (X)

You want to stun the enemy monster with your hammer? Then you need this combo: Charge II (ZR and release while charging) > Side Strike (A) > Overhead Strike II (X) > Uppercut (X)

The fourth combo has you spinning around like a humming top, dealing out powerful damage: Charge (hold ZR) > Spinning Stick (keep holding ZR, run forward with the left joystick and release ZR). Now there are three options of which final attack you make afterwards:

  1. Spinningsideways strike: press X when turning for the first time.
  2. Rotatingadditional attack: Press X between the second and third rotation.
  3. SpinningStrong Upward Swing: Press X between the fourth and fifth turns.

New in Monster Hunter Rise: Silk Binder Attacks

Like all weapons in Monster Hunter Rise, the hammer has two silk binder attacks. They are:

Silk BinderTwist Stick: Silk Binder Attack, which you activate by pressing ZL X. You will jump forward and hit the ground after a few somersaults. If you press the charge button (ZR) beforehand, you can even increase your impact.

Impact crater: Silk binder attack, which you activate with ZL A. You jump straight up and then hit the ground with full force. However, you don't damage the monster on the ground, but already on the way down. The more you've charged your hammer with ZR beforehand, the more hits you'll land on the way down. However, the ability costs two rope beetles.

Switching skills for the hammer

You can swap out your silk binder attacks in Monster Hunter Rise. For example, you can exchange the Silk Binder Twist Stick for the Sprint Crusher. With the help of a rope beetle, you'll dash forward and deflect your opponent's attacks in this way.

We'll add more switching skills here as soon as they're known.
