Shoot, pass, dribble: master the basics in FIFA 20

Dribbling has become a bit more difficult in FIFA 20 and you can no longer spam countless tricks in a row. Because already at the second or at the latest the third execution of a skill move you miss the ball or your player puts it too far in front of you. You can avoid this by always running or sprinting a bit between two tricks. Nevertheless, you'll have to use the skill moves more sparingly than in the predecessor and think carefully about which feint is really necessary.

One of the most powerful skill moves in the FIFA series has always been the faked shot. By quickly pressing the shoot button followed by the pass button, your players will cancel the current shot animation, often causing panic and confusion in the defense. This is the case again in FIFA 20, which is why you should definitely have the fake shot in your repertoire.

Even more efficient is the fake pass, which you execute by pressing the high pass key and pass key in quick succession. With this variant, the movement is a bit slower than with the faked shot. Consequently, you also have more time to press both buttons in time and successfully cancel the pass. You can also add a small rotation to the skill move by flicking the right stick in the desired direction afterwards.

There is also the new penalty dribble in FIFA 20, which you activate with the LB/L1 button. This causes your player to guide the ball closer to your foot as long as you keep the left shoulder button of the controller pressed. In addition, he moves sideways on your command with the left stick, instead of turning completely in a new running direction. If you also press the R2/RB button, the player directs and keeps his gaze on the opponent's goal.

FIFA 20 Guide: The most important things about formation and tactics

Choose a formation with two strikersthis is because the revised defense in FIFA 20 will be a challenge for many opponents. With two strikers, you can build up pressure more easily and exploit mistakes in the defense mercilessly. The 4-1-2-1-2 formation has proven to be a good formation, which also worked well in the predecessor. Furthermore, the more defensive formations 4-3-1-2 or 4-2-2 are well suited to take off in FIFA 20.

When it comes to choosing the right tactics in FIFA 20, opinions differ. You are on the safe side with the defensive style "Balanced", while you leave the slider for the width roughly in the middle. Furthermore, your back line should be far forward, which is why you should choose seven or eight out of ten possible bars.

If your defense is high and rather wide, you'll force 1-on-1 situations and attack proactively at all times. The CPU isn't much help in defense, so the best tactic is to do as much of the defensive work personally as possible and not call in AI players to help. When attacking, you'll be on the safe side with the offensive style "Ball possession".

Of course, the offensive tactic depends on your playing style. If you're a counterattacking player, you'll do well with the "Quick build-up" variant. If you want your team to try out different tactics in attack, choose the "Balanced" variant. Leave the other tactic settings (width, players in the penalty area) in the middle. For corners and free kicks, select three of the five bars.

Your six-man (ZM or ZDM) gets the instruction "Stay back in attacks" (offensive support). Strikers and fast wingers get the striker instruction "Run over defense" (offensive runs), so that they offer themselves for passes into the run and advance. The last instruction in particular becomes important in FIFA 20, as strikers are actually faster than defenders this year.

This is how Timed Finish and Finesse shots work in FIFA 20

The probability of a green timed finish has been further reduced in FIFA 20, so you should keep your hands off it, especially in the penalty area. Instead, you should use the normal shot and aim as precisely as possible at the corner of the goal you want to hit. Nevertheless, you should practice the timed finish in training or skill games to use it situationally at the edge of the penalty area or for distance shots.

Press the Shoot button twice with perfect timing to execute a green Tim ed Finish shot with increased shooting power and accuracy. The first keystroke determines the shot power, while the second determines the Timed Finish result. Green timing is achieved by tapping the shot button a second time just before your player touches the ball. If in doubt, press it later rather than too early, as timing it too late will have no negative effect on the shot.

On the other hand, if you time the second button press too early, your timed finish shot will turn either yellow or red. As a result, both accuracy and shooting power decrease enormously and the shot attempt usually ends up far from the goal or rolls into the arms of the opponent's keeper. On the other hand, finesse shots celebrate their comeback in FIFA 20, after they were weakened in the predecessor. A clean finesse shot is made by aiming the player's strong foot into the far corner while holding down the R1/RB key during the shot.

Finesse shots are the best shooting technique in FIFA 20 (), especially in 1-on-1 situations against the goalkeeper and for flicks on the edge of the penalty area. Equally dangerous are flat finesse shots. To do this, you charge up the shooting power to two-thirds to three-quarters of the bar while holding down the R1/RB button and also pressing the L1/LB button. Don't let go of either shoulder button until the ball is in the net.

Use all new skill moves in FIFA 20 correctly

Besides the penalty dribble mentioned above, EA Sports has added a number of new skill moves to FIFA 20. In our guide, we'll tell you which new tricks are particularly powerful and how to execute them correctly to casually outplay your opponents. On the one hand, the new Flair Passes and Flair Shots have been cribbed from the new VOLTA mode. Just leave L2/LT printed when passing or shooting and your players will do casual passing and shooting animations.

The stylish passing and shooting moves are mastered by all players (including goalkeepers), but you will need the player trait "Flair" for some tricks. Another new skill move in FIFA 20 () is the Heel Chop Turn (4 stars). Hold down L2 or LT while aiming a shot and then press the left stick in the opposite direction.

The new FIFA 20 trick Drag to Drag (3 stars) is also a variation of the faked shot. This time you hold down L1 or LT while faking a shot to pull the ball towards you instead. Another simple and effective skill move new to FIFA 20 is the Setup Touch, which you can perform with any player.

With this trick, you put the ball a bit in front of you to give yourself more time to create space for the perfect shot. To do this, hold down the R2 or RT key while holding the right stick in the desired direction. If the shot path is still not clear, use the Flair Roulette skill move (4 stars). If you move the right stick 180 degrees from the bottom to the top and hold down the L2 or LT button, you'll make a stylish turn and leave your opponent stunned.

These are the coolest skill moves for 5-star killers

If a player has five stars in the special move, then he not only dribbles well, but also masters the most difficult FIFA 20 tricks to perfection. Among the best 5-star-skillers are Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Philippe Coutinho, Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo. If you have such a player in your team, you can make a real impression on your opponent with the following 5-star skill moves.

  • Elastico: Execute a semicircle with the right stick (right, down, left). With Elastico, feint to the right briefly and then move past the opponent on the left.
  • Reverse Elastico: Execute a semicircle with the right stick (left, down, right) and pass the opponent on the right after faking left.

  • Hocus Pocus: You start the skill move with a quarter turn of the right stick from the bottom to the left and hold it in this position for about 0.5 seconds. Then perform a half turn with the right stick (left, down, right).
  • Ball roll & flick: Hold the right stick to the left (or to the right) and then flick it up to perform a ball roll to the left (or right) with flick and make your opponents stumble into nothing.
  • Flip & Turn: This 5-star skill move is simple and effective. Flick the right stick up and then right or left to turn around from a run and perform a 90 degree change of direction.
  • Triple Elastico: Start the execution with a quarter turn of the right stick from bottom to right and complete the 5-star skill move with a half-circle movement of the right stick (right, bottom, left). Once you have the move and timing down, the triple Elastico is a powerful 5-star skill move in FIFA 20 () that is hard to defend.
