Diablo 3: Find Kanai's Cube and Modify Items

At a certain point in Diablo 3, Zoltun Kulle tells you about a "powerful artifact." As it turns out, he means Kanai's Cube. The goal is to find it and bring it home. In this guide you will learn:

  • Where to find Kanai's Cube
  • What the cube can do for you
  • How to use it

You want to know which build is best for the current season in Diablo 3? Our guide will tell you which skill will do the most damage with your class.

Diablo 3: Location of Kanai's Cube

To find Kanai's Cube, you will need to travel to the Ruins of Sescheron in Act III. However, the cube won't be placed right in front of your feet, you will have to search a bit. So fight your way through the throngs of monsters until you come to a passage that leads you to the Sanctum of the Elders.

However, you still won't have arrived. You will then have to find the entrance to a cave. Step through it and you'll come to a platform with a pedestal on which Kanai's cube is placed. After that, return to your base - it doesn't matter in which act - and complete Zoltun Kullen's mission in Diablo 3.

What does Kanai's cube do and what are its abilities?

Now you can access Kanai's cube in any base. You can use the cube to upgrade, reforge, or otherwise modify your equipment. There are also three additional slots that you can fill with items. But how?

As soon as you click on the cube, a kind of book opens. On the left side you can place materials, on the right side you can see what you need for the respective recipe.

Extract Legendary Trait

This is one of the most important skills in Diablo 3. Most of the legendary items you collect during leveling have a special effect. For example, it can make your items indestructible, improve your armor by 300 percent, heal you on hits, etc.

As the recipe suggests, you can remove the legendary property from the item, destroying the item itself. The trait then ends up in your collection, from which you can choose the one you need for your build at the moment. This works via the three additional slots you can use in Kanai's cube.

You'll have one piece of armor, one piece of jewelry, and one weapon at your disposal. Click on one of the icons, then select the desired legendary trait and it will be active - without you having to wear the corresponding item. Note, however, that you can only use legendary traits that your class can use. Increased block chance would be pretty useless on a wizard.

To extract the trait, place the corresponding item in Kanai's cube and add the required materials. In this case:

  • 5 Breath of Death
  • 1 Holy Water from Westmark
  • 1 Spoiled angel flesh
  • 1 Tapestry from Arreat
  • 1 Nightshade from Caldeum
  • 1 rune from Khanduras

You will receive the required materials in Diablo 3 for completing the five bounties per act.

The materials you need are obtained by completing bounties.

Reforge Legendary Item

Don't like the stats on your legendary item? Then you can reforge them into Kanai's Cube. With a little luck, your items can be upgraded to an ancient - and thus better - version. But: Even ancient items can be downgraded to non-ancient items.

You need :

  • 50 Forgotten Souls
  • 5 Holy Water from Westmark
  • 5 Corrupted Angel Flesh
  • 5 Tapestry from Arreat
  • 5 Nightshade from Caldeum
  • 5 Round from Khanduras

You prefer other values on your item? No problem.

Upgrade rare item

You can also upgrade level 70 rare items (yellow) in Kanai's Cube to a legendary item in Diablo 3. With 25 Breath of Death, which you need among other things, this is quite expensive. However, you then have a chance to get not only a legendary item, but even an ancient legendary item . So if you place a rare weapon and its materials in the cube, there's a chance you'll get your best-in-slot weapon - ancient!

Besides the rare item, you will also need:

  • 50 Cloudy Crystal
  • 50 Arcane Dust
  • 50 Recyclable Parts
  • 25 Breath of Death

Go from rare to legendary with just one click!

Convert set item

Especially in the endgame it happens again and again that you eagerly wait for the missing set item, but it just won't drop. If you have the other parts in multiple copies, throw them into Kanai's cube. This way you can increase the chance that the duplicate items will become the missing set piece.

You will need:

  • 10 Breath of Death
  • 10 Forgotten Souls

Kanai's Cube is a bit like playing the lottery!

Remove level requirement

Pretty self-explanatory, really, isn't it? If you want to use an item with a twink, for example, remove the level requirement. Now your level 1 character can carry a weapon from the endgame. Practical!

And away with it!

Convert gems

If you have more than enough of one color of gems, but just a handful of the others, you can convert them into Kanai's cubes. Place nine gems in the cube and add the colored essence that you want the gems to have later. You can buy the colored essence from crumbs in the hidden storage of Act II. However, each essence costs 500,000 gold in Diablo 3.

The colored essences have their price ..

Convert crafting materials

You know it for sure: You always have too much of some materials and too little of others. Fortunately, in Kanai's Cube they can be converted. For example, Recyclable Parts: Throw 100 of them into Kanai's Cube and add a Breath of Death and a yellow piece of armor and you'll get 100 Cloudy Crystals. Again, put 100 Cloud Crystals in the cube along with a Breath of Death and a blue piece of armor, and you'll get 100 Arcane Dust.

Improve Ancient Item

Legendary items are already quite desirable in Diablo 3. But it's even better when you get the items as an ancient version. The legendary properties are identical to the "normal" item, but the stats of the weapon or equipment are much better.

But even then, you can still improve the values of the ancient legendary items - by the value of the respective gem color. Example: If you want to improve your ancient legendary weapon, you will also need a legendary gem that is at least level 30 and three flawless royal gems.

Depending on the gem, your stats will improve as follows:

  • Ruby (red) = Strength
  • Topaz (yellow) = Intelligence
  • Emerald (green) = Dexterity
  • Amethyst (purple) = vitality

The same applies if you want to upgrade a ring or amulet, but then you need a legendary gem with at least level 40. If you decide to buy a piece of armor, the legendary gem must be upgraded to at least level 50.

You can even make an ancient item even better.
