Destiny Item Manager: How DIM works

Our guide to the Destiny Item Manager for Destiny 2 tells you:

  • Why DIM is a must-have for every Destiny player
  • How to manage your inventory with DIM
  • How to create loadouts using the Destiny Item Manager
  • How to tag weapons and armor

What is the DIM (Destiny Item Manager)?

Many functions in Destiny 2 are solved very awkwardly and cost a lot of time if you want to perform them in the game. These include swapping mods, moving weapons back and forth between characters and the vault, and creating loadouts.

This is where the third-party app DIM (Destiny Item Manager) comes in, allowing you to manage your inventory in the browser or via app on your smartphone or tablet. DIM saves you a whole lot of time and nerves, allowing you to focus more on in-game activities and less on fumbling with your inventory.

DIM is available on these platforms:

Once you open the app, you'll need to log in to DIM with the platform account you play Destiny on, i.e. PlayStation, Xbox, Steam or Stadia.

How do I change the language of the Destiny Item Manager?

To change the language, click on the settings gear in the top right corner of the browser or on the "Settings" item in the smartphone app menu.

Under "Language" you can choose between "German", "English" and numerous other languages.

You can even change the language of the Destiny Item Manager.

Item management made easy

When you click on "Inventory," you can drag and drop items between all of your characters, the mailroom, and the vault. Especially if you play multiple characters, this feature is a big relief.

In the smartphone app, the drag-and-drop feature only works in landscape mode. In portrait mode, you have to click on an item and then select one of the three character icons at the bottom to move the item.

Search function for all your items

Use the search bar at the top of the screen to search all characters and the vault for armor and weapons. Just type in the item you want and DIM will tell you where it is. Like Google, DIM has an autocomplete feature, so you often only need to enter the first few letters of a weapon for the DIM app to show you the weapon you're looking for.

Compare Items

Found a weapon with new perks and want to quickly compare it to the existing version in your vault? Click on the weapon in the DIM and select "Compare." Destiny Item Manager will then automatically show you all the versions of the weapon you have - whether they are stored in the vault or on another character.

For armor, this feature is only worthwhile for exo or raid armor, as it will only compare the same pieces of armor.

With the DIM, you can compare weapons at a glance.

Tag items: Find weapons quickly

You can assign your own categories to weapons or armor using tags. For example, you can quickly distinguish between PvP and PvE weapons. Click on an item and add your own category under "Add Note" using a hashtag, e.g. "#pvp". If you then type "#pvp" in the DIM search bar, you'll see all the weapons you've tagged with that note.

We also like to use this function to mark weapons that we have kept for infusion purposes only. This way you don't have to search forever in your vault for a weapon to infuse. You can find all information about infusing in Destiny 2 in the linked guide.

With the right tags you can quickly find suitable weapons in your vault.

DIM: Create & save loadouts

Important: Equipping a loadout is only possible in the tower, helmet or orbit during gameplay, as mods cannot be changed by the DIM in ongoing activities.

One of the best and most important features of the DIM is saving loadouts - a feature Destiny 2 unfortunately lacks so far. In the DIM, click on "Equipment" (Loadouts) and on "Create Equipment". Here you can set your focus including fragments and aspects, weapons, armor (including all mods), emblem, ship, sparrow and ghost.

If you have created your own loadout in-game, click on "Fill with Equipped" and DIM will take over the equipment you are currently wearing in Destiny 2. After you've given the loadout a suitable name, save it - now you can equip this configuration in-game at any time by clicking "Apply". Don't be surprised if this sometimes takes a while: especially for equipping mods, DIM takes a while.

If you spend a lot of time buildcrafting in Destiny 2, you won't be able to avoid the DIM at all.

Optimize armor loadout

If you have a lot of armor pieces, it can be quite a hassle to fumble together the stat distribution you want for a loadout. DIM can help you with that, too. Click on "Equipment Optimizer" in the loadout menu on the left. Here you can set which stats you need for your loadout and DIM will automatically pick the appropriate armor pieces from your vault.

For each of the six armor stats - mobility, resilience, recovery, discipline, intellect, and strength - you can set a minimum and maximum value. You can also choose whether you want DIM to assume that all armor pieces aremasterworked (masterwork armor pieces have improved stats). Very handy, since you'll probably masterwork frequently used loadouts sooner or later anyway.

Also, you can choose an exotic armor piece to use for this build.

In our screenshot example, we want to put together a Void Grenade build with the Nezarek's Sin exo-helmet for the Warlock. Important stats for us are discipline and recovery, we want as low stats as possible for mobility. We also want DIM to assume that all armor pieces (including Exo) are mastered.

With the equipment optimizer, you can quickly put together a suitable loadout.

If you want to customize your loadouts a bit more sophisticated, we recommend the D2ArmorPicker. This tool even automatically inserts stat mods into the armor to achieve the desired values. Also handy: You can copy your loadout created with D2ArmorPicker and paste it into the Destiny Item Manager as well as save it.
