The story of Doom Eternal

After the end of 2016's Doom reboot, Earth falls victim to an invasion of demons. Now it's up to you with chainsaw and BFG 9000 to put a stop to the henchmen and save humanity from its doom.

There is really nothing more to know. Doom is all about fast and crisp shooter gameplay, so there's no time for a deep story.

Gameplay innovations: Climbing with the Doom Slayer

The gameplay innovations in Doom Eternal are mainly related to movement. The double jump from Doom 2016 is joined by the Doom Slayer's ability to climb up walls at certain points in the game. In addition, the Super Shotgun brings a meat hook attachment as a mod.

The attachment acts as a grappling hook that you can use to pull yourself up to enemies and overcome chasms. With the new Dash or Double Sprint, you can dodge projectiles in any direction at any time.

Also new is the way you get the three resources - health, armor and ammo - in Doom Eternal. Health is obtained through the glory kills introduced in the predecessor, the brutal melee finishers that you can perform as soon as your enemies light up.

Armor is obtained by defeating demons with the new flamethrower mounted on your back. Fresh ammo, on the other hand, can only be obtained by cutting up the monsters with the chainsaw. This adds a bit of tactics to the game, and you'll always have to weigh up which resource you need the most.

With chainsaw kills you get additional armor.

For Doom fans of the first hour, the option to center your weapon in the middle of the screen also returns, as it was in the very first Doom in 1993. Doom 2016 only added this option later via a patch.

This is how the new game mode Invasion works

In Invasion mode, as the name suggests, you can take on the role of a demon to haunt another player's single-player campaign. Similar to Dark Souls 3, you infiltrate a player's mission and try to finish him off.

It is intended by the developers as an end-game activity and should thus provide high replay value for the campaign and offer you a new challenge away from the AI-controlled enemies.

The new game mode Invasion will be released as a free update some time after release.

2-against-1 Multiplayer: Battle Mode

Unlike the last Doom from 2016, Doom Eternal will no longer bring a classic multiplayer mode. Instead, the so-called Battle mode awaits you.

In this mode, one player takes on the role of the Doom Slayer, while two other players oppose him as demons. You will fight each other for five rounds on one of the six maps that will be available at release.

The demon team can choose from five playable demons - among others the Revenant and Mancubus. They can also spawn AI-controlled demons for support.

A round is won when either the Doom Slayer or both player-controlled demons are defeated. Once a demon is defeated, the slayer has 20 seconds to defeat the other demon, otherwise the other demon spawns again - but only with half life.

Lootboxes & microtransactions in Doom Eternal?

Publisher Bethesda has repeatedly drawn attention to itself with all kinds of microtransactions in its games in recent years. In 2019's Wolfenstein: Youngblood, for example, you can buy gold bars with real money, which in turn can be used to buy in-game weapon and character skins.

So it wouldn't have been surprising if Doom Eternal also offered microtransactions in some form.

However, the creative director of Doom Eternal - Hugo Martin - has good news for all Doom fans. The Bethesda-published shooter will do away with microtransactions and lootboxes entirely. Reddit user OnyxsWorkshop found the following comment from Hugo Martin in a Doom fan group on Facebook:

"(Doom) Eternal is a $60 game, not a free-to-play title and not a mobile game - you'll get the full experience, with no in-game store, just as you'd expect."

Skins can only be unlocked with experience points within the game, according to Hugo Martin, and there should be no way to purchase them with real money.

Doom Eternal: Release on PC, Stadia, PS4, Xbox One & Switch

Doom Eternal was actually supposed to be released in 2019, but publisher Bethesda postponed it to 2020 at short notice. Doom Eternal is now scheduled for release on March 20, 2020 for PC, Google Stadia, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

In Doom Eternal, you will once again have to deal with all kinds of demons.

Doom Eternal will also be playable on the Nintendo Switch, but only some time after the versions for the other platforms. Bethesda has not yet announced an exact release date for the Switch version.
