Developed by Omega Force and released exclusively on Nintendo Switch, the action role-playing game Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes features a total of three story campaigns in which you can unlock more than a dozen characters each. In this guide, we'll show you which characters can be unlocked on the "Red Flames" path of the Black Eagles led by Edelgard and which unlock conditions have to be met.

Furthermore, we outline the best character class for each character (can be changed by the master teacher in the camp) as well as the ideal gifts for each character on this route. Ideal gifts increase a character's support value and provide better partner special attacks in combat, among other things.

Characters unlocked from chapter 3

Edelgard of Hresvelg

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Leader of the Empire, therefore automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, stuffed bear with armor, monarch knowledge, board game, carnation
  • Best class: Empress

Hubert of Vestra

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Due to his permanent affiliation with the Adrestia Empire, he will be automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign starting in Chapter 3.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl feather, coffee beans, board games, Fódlan history book
  • Best class: Dark Bishop

Ferdinand of Aegir

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Due to his firm affiliation with the Adrestia Empire, he is automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign starting in Chapter 3.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, tea leaves, riding boots, whetstone
  • Best class: Holy Knight

To attract characters to your side, you need to choose the appropriate strategy before the respective main mission.

Caspar of Bergliez

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Automatically unlocked through his permanent affiliation with the Adrestia Empire starting in Chapter 3 of the "Red Flames" campaign.

  • Best class: Wyvernlord

Monica von Ochs

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Due to her permanent affiliation with the Adrestia Empire, she is automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign starting in Chapter 3.
  • Ideal Gifts: Hunting Dagger, Arithmetic Textbook, Fódlan History Book, Monarch Knowledge, Owl Feather, Carnation
  • Best class: Gremory

Dorothea Arnault

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Due to her firm affiliation with the Adrestia Empire, she will be automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign starting in Chapter 3.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl Feather, Sheet Music Collection, Gems, Fancy Hair Ornaments

Once you have given someone an ideal gift, two upward arrows will appear next to the character's portrait shortly after.

Petra Macneary

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Due to her firm affiliation with the Adrestia Empire, she will be automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign starting in Chapter 3.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, hunting dagger, smoked meat, sunflower, exotic spices
  • Best class: Crook

Bernadetta of Varley

  • Affiliation: Empire of Adrestia
  • Unlock Condition: Due to her firm affiliation with the Adrestia Empire, she will be automatically unlocked in the "Red Flames" campaign starting in Chapter 3.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl feather, Water jar plant, Landscape painting, Watering can, Noble handkerchief, Cloth bear with armor, Sheet music collection

Linhardt of Hevring

Hapi

  • Affiliation: Ash Wolves
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 4 of the "Red Flames" campaign.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, exotic spices, delicious pastries, smoked meat, hunting dagger, water jug plant, coffee beans
  • Best class: Gremory

Jeritza of Hrym

  • Affiliation: Church of Seiros
  • Unlock Condition: Automatically join the Black Eagles in the "Red Flames" campaign at the start of Chapter 4.

  • Best Class: Death Knight

Jeritza is a gifted fighter and a loyal ally. Always keep his character level at the same level as that of protagonist Shez.

Manuela Casagranda

  • Unlock Condition: Automatically join the Black Eagles at the start of Chapter 4 of the "Red Flames" campaign. Cannot be recruited on the other paths.

  • Best class: Gremory

Chapter 5 & 6: Unlockable characters

Ashe Ubert

  • Affiliation: Kingdom of Faerghus
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 5 (The Battle of Magdred). Costs 20 strategy resources.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl Feather, Delicious Pastry, Knight Legend Book, Violet, Ancient Coin, Exotic Spices
  • Best class: Bow Knight

Balthus of Albrecht

  • Affiliation: Ashwolves
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy (cost: 20 strategy resources) in the main mission of Chapter 6 of the "Red Flames" campaign.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl Feather, Ceremonial Sword, Blue Cheese, Ancient Coin, Whetstone
  • Best class: War Master

Stock up on gifts at the vendor in the warehouse. Take enough change with you, because some presents empty the war chest quickly.

Ignatz Victor

Lorenz Hellman Gloucester

  • Affiliation: Leicester Alliance
  • Unlock Condition: Can be brought to the side of the Black Eagles by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 6 (Bridge of Betrayal) of the "Red Flames" campaign. Costs ten strategy resources.

  • Best Class: Dark Knight

Chapter 7 & 8: Unlockable Characters

Lysithea of Ordelia

  • Affiliation: Alliance of Leicester
  • Unlock Requirement: Join the Black Eagles in the "Red Flames" campaign after successfully using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 7. "Persuasion" costs ten strategy resources.
  • Ideal gifts: Lily, Owl feather, Book of crown design, Arithmetic textbook, Delicious pastry, Stuffed bear with armor
  • Best class: Gremory

You can change the class of a hero on the training ground. To change to the best class, you need so-called ultimate seals.

Marianne of Edmund

  • Affiliation: Alliance of Leicester
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 7. This costs ten strategy resources.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl Feather, Lily of the Valley, Cloth Bear with Armor, Flower Ornament, Noble Handkerchief
  • Best class: Gremory

Raphael Kirsten

  • Affiliation: Leicester Alliance
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 7. Cost: ten strategy resources.

Mercedes of Martritz

  • Affiliation: Kingdom of Faerghus
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 8. Mandatorily requires Jeritza to be of your house at that time. Recruitment costs 20 strategy resources.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, stuffed bear with armor, delicious pastry, goddess statue, lavender, gems
  • Best Class: Gremory

Chapter 9, 10 & 12: Unlockable Characters

Shamir Nevrand

  • Affiliation: Church of Seiros
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 9.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl feather, hunting dagger, sunflower, coffee beans, exotic spices, sheet music collection
  • Best Class: Bow Knight

Byleth Eisner

  • Affiliation: Ash Demon
  • Unlock Condition: Play the main mission of Chapter 10 (History Change). During the mission, make sure to keep Baron Mateus alive by bringing the bulwarks around him under your control. This will force him to surrender. Now help the spell engineers in the side mission, which in turn unlocks the strategy "Echo Magic: Lightning" (select it before starting the mission!). Only now (never before!) conquer the northwestern bulwarks. Then ignore the side mission, in which it's about defeating Byleth, and go to the southeast of the map after completing the bridge. There you'll first make short work of Alois and then Rodrigue. If you manage to unlock Byleth, you'll unlock two secret chapters that conclude the story between Shez and Arval.

  • Best Class: The Enlightened One

Jeralt Reus Eisner

  • Affiliation: Church of Seiros
  • Unlock Condition: Successfully complete main mission of Chapter 10 and not get in the way of Byleth. Will eventually only be recruited if you manage to recruit Byleth as well.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, blue cheese, smoked meat, whetstone, riding boots, float for fishing
  • Best class: Holy Knight

Always complete all the side missions on the map to collect enough strategy resources. They are the most important currency to gain new comrades for your cause.

Yuri

  • Affiliation: Ashwolves
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 10 on the "Red Flames" route. It costs ten strategy resources.
  • Ideal gifts: Owl feather, Delicious pastry, Board game, Goddess statue, Arithmetic textbook
  • Best class: Crooks

Leonie

  • Affiliation: Leicester Alliance
  • Unlock Condition: Can be convinced by using a strategy in the main mission of Chapter 12. Assumes you spared Jeralt in Chapter 10, however.
  • Ideal Gifts: Owl Feather, Fishing Float, Training Weight, Hunting Dagger
  • Best class: Holy Knight
