Go on a big game hunt! In this Monster Hunter Rise tips guide, you'll learn:

  • How quests work
  • Why you should always go hunting well-fed
  • Which weapons you should play at the beginning

Internalize the Monster Hunter loop

Veterans will be in the know from the start in Monster Hunter Rise, but if you haven't had the game series on your radar before, it's worth taking a look at how it works. The game's entire "loop" - that is, the sequence of major actions that you repeat over and over again - looks like this:

  • In the village, select the monster you want to hunt by accepting a quest.
  • Prepare for the hunt by choosing your weapons and armor, stocking your inventory and fortifying yourself with food.
  • Travel to the area where the monster is running around.
  • Fight the monster and defeat or capture it.
  • Build new, stronger weapons and armor from the monster parts you got while hunting.
  • And back to square one !

This is how the different quests in Monster Hunter Rise work

Right after your first steps in Monster Hunter Rise, the game introduces you to the twin sisters Hinoa and Minoto. Hinoa is the so-called "quest girl", Minoto is the "site girl" and both of them have quests for you to pick up from them.

  • Hinoa can be found in the central square in Kamura Village. She has village quests for you - story missions that take you solo through the Monster Hunter Rise campaign. She also has training quests for you that will teach you the basics of the game.
  • Minoto is located in the site - a spacious house in the west of Kamura. You'll get site quests from her that are designed for multi-player groups. You can also do them alone, but be prepared for a crunchy challenge.

When you're in Kamura, you'll see your quest progress for village and site quests in the upper right corner of the screen. Complete the indicated number of quests to unlock an urgent quest. Completing them increases your hunter rank, which in turn unlocks better quests.

Take side quests with you

Hinoa and Minoto have side quests in addition to the "big" quests. These are often smaller collecting tasks, but sometimes also additional hunting objectives. The special thing: While you can only pursue one of each village and site quests at a time, you have room for up to five side quests. Always stock up on them before you go on a hunt - side quests are not just a nice way to pass the time, but reward you with valuable materials that you need to upgrade your equipment.

Always have enough side quests with you!

Use the training area

Monster Hunter Rise lets you choose between 14 weapons right from the start, all of which play completely differently. For beginners, this can be quite overwhelming - but luckily the game comes with a training area where you can practice all attacks and combos of all weapons at your leisure!

You can reach the training area by walking across the wooden suspension bridge in Kamura into the forest area called Buddy Plaza. There, go to the water and interact with the small boat, which will then take you to the training area. Alternatively, hold down the [-] key in the village to call up the map. There you can directly select the item "Training Area" and you will immediately get to your beating dummy without any detours.

Good wood! The "monster" in the training area only punches in and does not deal out.

Monster Hunter Rise: These are the best weapons for beginners

Don't know where to start when it comes to choosing weapons? These weapons are especially good for new players:

  • Sword & Shield: A good, safe mix of offensive and defensive.
  • Dual Blades: Quick blows and flexibility in dodging - with these blades, beginners can afford to make a few mistakes without getting crushed right away.
  • Longsword: Good range and easy to learn combos make the longsword a good choice for beginners. Bonus: Its attacks look impressive with little practice!
  • Light Bow Rifle: Mobile and full of surprises - first choice for newcomers who are more interested in ranged combat.

Spoilt for choice: Try all the weapons - they are all completely different!

Well fortified is half hunted!

Before you set out on a quest, make sure you eat something! Meals increase your stats and give you unique perks along the way. Stop by Yomogi's Canteen in Kamura and assemble a dango - a skewer of three dumplings that you can combine any way you like. Pay special attention to specific bonuses that can help you against your hunting target: If you're hunting a fire monster, for example, you should increase your fire resistance. You can unlock new Dango recipes by completing quests.

Important: All Dango buffs have a certain activation chance. This value determines how likely you are to receive the bonus from the meal. If you use one of the rare Dango vouchers in the Canteen menu, you are guaranteed to get the bonuses from your meal. This is especially worthwhile for later, dangerous quests. If you set out on a quest and forget to visit the canteen, you can still have a meal in your tent at the starting point of the quest.

Combine different dumplings in the canteen for bonuses.

Match your armor to the monsters

From hunted monsters you will build new armor and weapons in Monster Hunter Rise. You decide which armor you should wear not only based on the armor value, but also on resistances and certain bonuses. Some armors strengthen your protection against certain elemental attacks, but often weaken your protection against others. Therefore, always weigh carefully which armor set you use against which monster.

Forinformation on the strengths and weaknesses of your targets, press the [ ] key, scroll down the menu to "Information" (middle icon), select "Hunter Notes" and then "Big Monsters". In the hunter notes you can also get helpful information about all other topics of the game at any time.

Before each hunt, you should also update your weapons and armor. Go to the blacksmith in Kamura and improve them or craft completely new armor from monster parts that you brought back from previous hunts. Constantly leveling up your equipment is the most important advancement your character makes in Monster Hunter Rise!

The blacksmith in Kamura will upgrade your equipment.

Use the environment

When you set out on a quest, don't just focus on the monster you're hunting. Always be on the lookout for useful items in the environment. These can be plants, ores and mushrooms that you collect and process, but also small creatures that temporarily strengthen your stats. Use the rope beetles to reach inaccessible, higher areas.

Some of the environment's peculiarities also help you in combat: for example, there are clouds of small electric beetles that blind monsters when you press the A button near them. Lure your prey to them and get an advantage!

Play in co-op multiplayer

Monster Hunter games are traditionally great co-op games and Monster Hunter Rise is no different. Hunting as a team opens up a whole new set of tactics. And if a site quest is too hard for you, summon other players to help by selecting the "Accept with Entry Request" option when accepting the quest. Now, up to three other players can join your hunt and assist you.

Note, however, that the difficulty increases with each additional player, but you'll have many more ways to distract monsters and attack from different directions.
