As some scientists in the Kalos region have observed, Pokémon in Niantic's smartphone app have achieved Mega Evolution. This new level of evolution not only gives them new powers, but also opens up entirely new gameplay possibilities for you.

What do I need to Mega Evolve in Pokémon GO?

In battles, Pokémon that Mega Evolve gain new powers for a limited time. But Professor Willow took a close look at the new ability and found that it is different from the Mega evolutions from Pokémon Shield () or Pokémon Sword ().

In order to Mega Evolve in Pokémon GO, you'll need Mega Energy. You'll get this special resource from Mega Raids, in which the Mega evolutions of some Pokémon are your opponents. As in all Pokémon GO Raids, you will receive more substance if you defeat the opponent quickly.

The more often you perform a Mega Evolution, the better. Each time you Mega Ev olve, the cost of Mega Energy for the next time decreases.

Which Pokémon have a Mega evolution in Pokémon GO?

As of September 2020: Currently, four or five Pokémon can Mega Evolve in Pokémon GO, as long as you have collected enough Mega Energy. You can see which and how many Mega evolutions there are in your Pokédex. It also shows you which Mega evolution you have already had.

  • Bisaflor
  • Glurak X
  • Glurak Y
  • Turtok
  • Bibor

Clone and Crypto Pokémon do not have Mega evolution.

Niantic only allows one Mega evolution at a time. So if you want to see another Pokémon in XXL, the first Mega evolution will revert to normal.

What can I do with the Mega Evolution?

When you trigger a Mega Evolution, your Pokémon grows and changes visually for a certain amount of time. In doing so, it brings some benefits to you and your party. Since Mega Evolution lasts even after the battle is over, you can use it for various things.

  • In (raid) battles: your teammates' Pokémon get a decent attack bonus. Use them to fight in Raids, against Team GO Rocket, or for Arena battles. Please note that Mega Pokémon cannot occupy arenas.
  • Outside of battles: Equip your Mega Pokémon as a buddy, let it appear on the map like this and play with it. They are also suitable for battles between friends or for cool snapshots with the GO Snapshot function.

Mega development event in September 2020

Niantic turns the ninth month of the year into Mega September and lets you fight in numerous raids as well as participate in promotions for great bonuses.

  • 01. September 2020 - September 07, 2020: numerous Mega Raids pop up so you can collect Mega Energy.
  • 11. September 2020 - September 17, 2020: test your favorite Mega Pokémon in Arena battles, against friends and Team GO Rocket.
  • 22. September 2020 - September 28, 2020: Your Mega Evolution Pokémon can become your buddy. Play with it and feed it berries!
