Pokémon GO Arena Guide: Best Battle Teams and Battle League Info

To defeat an arena in Pokémon GO, you need a good battle team. We reveal to you:

  • the best Pokemon for arena battles
  • Tips and tricks for the Pokémon Go Arena
  • everything you need to know about the Battle League and the preseason

There is no one team that is sure to leave every arena as the winner. It often depends on several factors, such as your own Trainer Rank, a Pokémon's stats, and even a bit of your personal taste. For example, if you want to compete together with your friends, it is advantageous to match your pocket monsters.

To give you a rough idea of which Pokémon are real heroes in the arena, we've brought along a few suggestions. Our tip: Be sure to use the Pokémon GO rating button when choosing your team. Since the latest update, your team boss has exciting insights into the stats of the individual monsters.

We have summarized the best way to train your Pokémon in another guide. This works quite differently than you're used to in handheld games like Pokémon Ultrasonne () & Ultramond ().

Table of Contents:

The top 6 Pokémon to win in the arena

Machomei

Probably the most frequently mentioned Pokémon for a successful team is Machomei. In our guide to the current Raid bosses, we have also listed him often - because his type, together with the attacks, make a top counter. This is also due to the attacks Balancing Strike and Counter, which are considered the best combat attacks in the game.

Depending on how good your Machomei's other stats are, it can also last quite a long time. Many players swear by having Machomei three times in the battle team. Whether or not you want to do that is up to you. It also depends a bit on strategy and the opponent. But especially against arenas with strong defenders, you should have at least one Machomei with you. For Pokémon opponents like Heiteira or Relaxo we recommend a small Machomei army.

Alternatives for Machomei are Kapilz and Hariyama, which are also strong fighting Pokémon and deal out a lot in the arena.

Mewtu

Mewtu stands out from your battle team, because if we remember back to the anime, Mewtu is just a test tube-made pocket monster. Although you can't place it in an arena, like all other legendary Pokémon, you may still fight with it. However, be sure to use the normal Mewtu. The armored Mewtu is much weaker.

The legendary Pokémon has one of the highest attack values in Pokémon GO. Also, you have the option to teach it the attacks of six different P0kémon types, which makes it incredibly adaptable.

Rayquaza

The green Pokémon Rayquaza also cuts a good figure in arena battles, as its attack value is similar to Mewtu's. Since Rayquaza is capable ofDragon-type attacks, it is a viable counter against most other Pokémon. Similar to Mewtu it only fights in arenas, but does not occupy any.

Kyogre

We'd like to directly suggest another legendary Pokémon that causes terror in arena battles: Kyogre. With its powerful water attacks and high attack value, it puts the fear of God into many a defender. Since the other two stats are also quite acceptable, Kyogre is a true all-rounder.

Mammutel

Mammutel provides icy cold in the arena. It has the strongest attack value of its type and beats many opponents with the ice attacks Powder Snow and Avalanche. Since its defense value is also quite high, it lasts a long time in the arena.

Lohgock

Actually, we were going to name Lavados as one of the best fighters. But the Firebird is also a legendary monster that is hard to get. That's why we'd rather introduce you to Lohgock, who makes the arena blaze with his Fire Whirl and Lohe Cannon. Its high attack value is its great strength.

Fancy fighters for your Pokémon GO battle team

Rameidon - This rock Pokémon stands out because it masters a rare attack: catapult. Its stats are also good, making it suitable for the arena.

Roserade - The attacks Razor Leaf and Shrubber, coupled with the high attack value, make Roserade a good Arena Pokémon.

Guardevoir - A Fairy Pokémon could also fit into your battle teams. Charm and Spell Appearance sound harmless, but paired with Guardevoir's good stats, they are deadly.

The Automatic Battle Team

If you want to fight in an arena or face a raid boss, Niantic will automatically suggest a battle team. If you don't have time to think about this right now or are new to Pokémon GO, this is not a bad choice. For optimal conditions, however, you should create your own team.

Pokémon that have very good statscan also hatch from eggs. Check out our guide to see which pocket monsters you can currently get from them.

Everything about the Battle League in Pokémon GO

Besides battles against Team Rocket and hot battles in Raids, there is still no way to compete against other Pokémon. But that will soon change. in 2020, Niantic will launch the Battle League to allow you to fight against trainers.

Players in the Super League will get their chance first, followed by those in the Hyper and Master Leagues. The system rotates every two weeks so everyone gets their turn.

A rather rare pocket monster: Kangama

The battle league will first start in a kind of beta phase, the so-called pre-season. During this time, Niantic will add more features and extensively test innovations so that everything works smoothly at the start of the season. In addition, this time will be used to study your behavior in the Battle League: Niantic will later use this data to determine how long a season will last, among other things.

So far, we know that you'll be competing against trainers of the same rank. In order to advance, you'll have to compete in many battles and also win. Only when you win will you climb further and receive better rewards. The Super League is already running in Pokémon GO in the pre-season:

  • Super League: Current
  • Hyper League: February 10, 2020
  • Master League: February 24, 2020
  • Super League: March 9, 2020

To qualify for the Battle League, you must walk five kilometers. From two kilometers of distance, the rest can be bought free with gold coins to participate in the fights faster. The collected steps unlock five online battles. This mechanism can be used up to three times a day, so that 15 fights are possible every day.

At the start of the pre-season, Niantic will give you the first battles for free, so you can get started right away. Rewards include items that match your current rank: stardust, special candies, and rare TM's. The more often you win matches, the higher your winnings will be.

As a participant of the Fight League, you will also get the chance to catch the Wrestler Pikachu. If you already play in the pre-season and rise in rank, you will receive cosmetic wrestler items for your avatar.

Another new feature is the name change of the Premium Raid Pass. It will soon be called Premium Battle Pass and will give you the opportunity to participate in premium battles in addition to raids. It will allow you to take part in special fights that others will not be able to. However, the special pass will not improve your rank.

Tips for Arena Battles in Pokémon GO

Build a good team that can counter different types of Pokémon. The best way to do this is to learn about the different types and their strengths and weaknesses.

For example, a Water Pokémon like Hydropi and its evolutions are vulnerable to Electric attacks, while it is effective against Fire Fighters like Flamara. Since the different Evoli evolutions also have different types, together they also make an exciting team. However, you should rather not compete with Folipurba, Blitza and Co. in a 5-star raid - the small evolutions of the fox Pokémon are too weak for that.

Make sure to level up your Pokémon properly before the battle, whether arena or raid. The limit is level 40.

Do you have a Pokémon with perfect stats, but it doesn't have any useful attacks? No problem! For some time now, it has been possible to change the attacks of a Pokémon in the Pokébox in Pokémon GO. To do this, look at the information card of the selected pocket monster and select the "Attacks" button. Here you can assign a new attack using a few resources.
