To make it easier for you to get started in the MMO from Amazon Studios, you should first take a look at our tips guide, which provides you with helpful tricks for the first few hours of play.

Do I have to choose a faction?

No! There is no obligation to choose a faction in New World. Once you reach level 10, you can ignore the quest and continue playing. However, you will not be able to unlock the PvP mode. Territory conquests will also run without you, and you won't be able to join a company (guild) either.

So before you run around factionless, you should join one of them and take advantage of the bonuses. And if you don't feel like PvP, it doesn't matter. You don't have to participate in the events.

Attack as a large group to take the fortress.

What do factions do in New World?

Factions have several functions in the MMO. We will explain what they are in the following sections.

Unlock PvP mode & conquer territories

Once you have chosen a faction, you will unlock the PvP mode. This means that from now on you can secure certain areas on the map. Then defend them against other players to get one or the other bonus.

The more settlements and fortresses your faction has conquered, the sooner you can take over the whole area. This will give you some advantages: Houses become cheaper, taxes decrease and fast travel is also cheaper. In addition, you will receive more experience points and increase the influence of your faction.

If an area is controlled by another faction and you take more and more positions with your faction, the influence of the dominating faction decreases - and yours increases. You can speed this up by completing faction missions. If the dominance of the opposing faction falls below a certain level, you can declare war. However, you'll need a large group of players for this, since you'll have to capture an entire fortress and the event is scheduled for one hour.

Once you belong to one of the factions, the PvP mode will be unlocked.

Faction Missions

As mentioned above, you can complete faction missions that will increase your influence in the respective areas. You always have a choice of three PvE and three PvP missions, which are constantly renewed. So there is always something to do and you can complete as many as you want.

For the first three faction missions you complete during the day, you will receive additional rewards. By default, completing them will earn you more reputation and tokens with your faction, gold, experience points, and area reputation with the resident settlement.

Gaining reputation and earning rewards

With the tokens from the faction missions you can buy special items from your faction, such as armor, weapons or exclusive resources. However, the respective factions don't have top-ranked weapons. The differences are only in the look.

For example, the Marauders' armor is green. Those of the Syndicate are purple, and the Alliance offers orange clothing.

Syndicate, Alliance, or Marauders: who do you want to join?

What factions are there?

In New World you can choose from three factions: the Marauders, the Syndicate and the Alliance. Below we will introduce you to the factions.

The Marauders - The World Belongs to the Brave

The description in New World reads: "Proud warriors who fight honorably for glory and self-improvement". Accordingly, this already indicates that this faction is especially at home with battle-hungry players. Members have DPS-heavy armor at their disposal.

Choose the Marauders if .. . you're into PvP and want to deal out some serious damage.

The Syndicate - Reveal Aeternum's Secrets

"Clever disciples who fight cunningly for truth and progress," reads the Syndicate's brief description. They consist mainly of mages and alchemists whose focus is on the secrets of Aeternum. Useful potions and equipment are highly valued by them.

Choose the Syndicate if . .. you want to deal damage using potions and other items, and enjoy alchemy.

The Alliance - Protect the Spark of Hope

It is written about the Alliance: "Divine warriors who stand up for righteousness and justice with conviction." This faction most closely resembles a grouping of paladins who have the welfare of all living beings at heart.

Choose this alliance if . .. you want to protect yourself from enemies with heavy armor and restore balance to Aeternum.

Can I change factions?

You have already joined a faction, but you are dissatisfied and would like to change to another one? You can - but not right away. In New World, you can only change factions every 120 days. Keep in mind that after switching, you will lose all your earned ranks and tokens and start from scratch.

Also, you can't switch to the faction that currently controls the most territories. So if you are unhappy with your choice and want to switch to the best faction on the server at the moment, this will not work.

If you still want to change your faction, go to the character overview (K) and switch to the "Biography" tab. On the left side you will see which faction you currently belong to and below that you will find the button "Change faction". Select your new faction and confirm your intention. You will also have to pay 100 Azoth.

If you are still undecided ..

... you can take a test in which you answer ten questions. Once you've clicked through, you'll find out whether you should join the Marauders, the Alliance, or the Syndicate. Even if you have already decided on a faction, it can be interesting to do the test again afterwards. We only discovered the test after we had chosen our faction - but the result agrees with our decision!
