Planet Zoo Continents: All native animals & more info
In this guide to Planet Zoo you will learn:
- which continent is the right one for your animals
- how to create your zoo with animals from different continents
- how you can cultivate several contin ents in Franchise Mode
- which DLCs you can use to expand your animal world and continents
In Planet Zoo you will find numerous animals from different continents, which differ in temperature, plant species and environment. If you start Planet Zoo, you can already choose in advance on which contin ent you want to build your zoo. This step should be well thought out, as it will have an impact on the rest of the game.
In this article you will learn which continent you should choose for which animal species and how they differ from each other. If you want to unlock more regions and animal species, you should also take a look at the DLCs "Australia Pack", "South America" and "Artic Pack". We'll tell you what to expect there. In our Planet Zoo tips guide and our guide for the best animal combinations in Planet Zoo, you can find more information about the zoo simulation.
Your zoo on the continent of your choice
Before you create your own zoo, you can choose the continent you want to build on. For example, in Franchise Mode you will first be asked what you would like to name your new zoo. Then you choose a continent. These are each divided into biomes. For example, under the "Grasslands" biome you'll find:
Asia | Europe |
North America | South-/Central America |
Africa | Oceania |
If you associate Asia directly with Indian elephants, rhinos & co. you are right. If you are mainly interested in these animals, you should choose the Planet Zoo continent Asia.
If, on the other hand, you prefer it cooler, you can choose the "Tundra" biome and thus have the "Antarctica" continent at your disposal.
It is noticeable that Antarctica is not part of the "Grasslands" biome. The simple reason for this is that heat-loving animals could hardly survive in Antarctica. Depending on your choice of continent, you start in a completely different world. For example, your zoo can be located in the desert or surrounded by the rainforest.
Planet Zoo: Asia, Africa & North, Central and South America
Temperatures on continents like Africa, Asia or parts of America can easily exceed 40 degrees. The zoo simulation Planet Zoo has also taken these temperatures into account and provided a variety of animals for each part of the world.
For example, the following animals are native to the continent of Asia:
Blue peacock | Ganges gavial |
Indian elephant | Indian giant scorpion |
Isabella bear | Royal Bengal Tiger |
Armored rhinoceros | Snow leopard |
Taiwanese black bear | Wolf |
Bornean orangutan | Chinese pangolin |
Ganges gavial | Giant Panda |
Lesser Panda | Indian giant scorpion |
Japanese macaque | Inguinal crocodile |
Pink flamingo | Bactrian camel |
Armored rhinoceros |
If you want to have animals native to Africa only in your zoo, you can go for these species:
African elephant | African ostrich |
African wild dog | Aldabra - giant tortoise |
Hippopotamus | Goliath frog |
Cape buffalo | Katta |
Mandrill | Reticulated giraffe |
Nile monitor | Sable antelope |
Spitbuck | Springbok |
Steppe zebra | Warthog |
Western chimpanzee | Western lowland gorilla |
White-tailed wildebeest | Spotted hyena |
Red variegated | Pink flamingo |
Puff adder | Okapi |
Nyala | Aardvark |
Real agate snail | Bonobo |
Bongo | West African lion |
America, on the other hand, is divided into three parts. So you will find North, Central and South America on the map. The temperatures vary from extreme sub-zero temperatures in Alaska to tropical temperatures in Brazil.
The following animals can be found in America:
Abgott snake | Brazilian wandering spider |
Pronghorn | Galapagos giant tortoise |
Yellow Anaconda | Goliath bird spider |
Grizzly bear | Lehmann's poison dart frog |
Central American tapir | Giant longhorn beetle |
Wolf | American bison |
Brazilian giant bird spider | Brazilian giant runner |
Yellow Anaconda | Gila crustacean |
Green Island Guan | Green Iguana |
Hairy desert scorpion | Texas Rattlesnake |
Five more animals join the biodiversity with the South America DLC:
Red-eyed tree frog | Capuchin monkey |
Great anteater | Llama |
Jaguar |
Visitors also need special attention. Hot temperatures, for example, also bring increased thirst. The hotter the days, the more cool drinks you should have on offer. If these are not available, the visitors make themselves negatively noticeable or give the zoo a bad evaluation. The situation is different in cool temperatures, where you should provide warming drinks.
The golden mean: Europe
If you start in a temperate climate, almost all animals are available to you. Although animals from hot continents are not necessarily compatible with the climate zone of Europe, you can support them with air conditioners.
The same goes for animals that like it cold. Adapt your air conditioner to the animals' preferences to provide a suitable habitat. So you can have African or Asian animals even in Europe, as long as you take the above points to heart. If you are looking for the golden mean between hot savannah and Antarctica, Europe is the right place.
Europe is home to the wolf, as well as the pink flamingo. Who wants to equip his zoo with plants, however, can choose from 155 plants and trees.
Who decides for Europe, should know however that by the installation of the many air conditioners larger costs can develop. This point should definitely be taken into account. In addition, equip your zoo with a suitable environment. To do this, simply select the correct continent in the menu under "Filter". This filter will only show you products that are relevant for your continent.
If you run out of money because of the air conditioners, have a look at our Planet Zoo guide to earn money quickly.
Planet Zoo: Animals in Oceania
Oceania offers a completely different scenery, because countries like Australia are characterized by desert and aridity. Here you can find not only reptiles, but also insects.
Australian large cockroach | Groin crocodile |
Death adder | Eastern brown snake |
Important on this continent are the high humidity for reptiles and insects and temperatures around 10 to 40 degrees. Australia and New Guinea are the ideal places for these species thanks to the dry bush landscape.
Planet Zoo Franchise Mode
If you don't want to commit yourself to one continent, you should start with the Franchise Mode as soon as possible. Here you can build your zoo from scratch and place enclosures, staff cabins and entertainment options yourself. You start in an empty world, which only provides a zoo entrance. Similar to Planet Coaster and Jurassic World Evolution ( from Frontier Developments), Planet Zoo lets you customize almost every shape and detail in your zoo.
After you build your first zoo, you can build more zoos on different continents. You want to have a real safari? Then choose the continent of Africa and your animals will feel comfortable in temperatures around 40 degrees. If, on the other hand, you want animals that prefer cold temperatures, choose Antarctica. With the Franchise mode you can switch between the individual Planet Zoo continents and build up an entire zoo empire. Thanks to the online function, you can also trade with your animals.
To do this, an animal must first be sent to the trading center. Young animals, infertile animals and older animals cannot be traded online. Species preservation points can only be obtained in Franchise mode.
All animals from the Planet Zoo DLCs
Shortly after release, Frontier Developments announced that the first DLCs were being planned. In the meantime, three expansions are available, providing players with even more animals, more scenarios and hundreds of new objects for your zoo.
Depending on whether you want to build your animal world in dry and desert-like landscapes, or deep in the rainforest, choose one of the following DLCs.
South America DLC
With the South America DLC, five more animals join the biodiversity.
Red-eyed tree frog | Capuchin monkey |
Great anteater | Llama |
Jaguar |
In total there are 250 new objects in this package. Among other things, you can build an Aztec temple or plant your own rainforest.
Australia Pack
With the DLC "Australia Pack" you also unlock five more animals for your zoo.
Koala | Dingo |
Red giant kangaroo | Helmeted Cassowary |
Blue-tongued skink |
Since helmeted cassowaries are probably one of the largest birds in the world, build an enclosure with plenty of outdoor space. To keep koalas happy, grow lots of eucalyptus.
Artic Pack
Your zoo will be expanded by four animals and 200 new objects with the "Artic Pack".
Polar bear | Reindeer |
Arctic wolf | Falling sheep |
Each animal has its own character and different needs. The polar bear is an absolute loner and can do without water. When building the enclosure, you can leave out the water trough. The polar bear simply produces liquid by digesting seal blubber. The sheep, however, is different. It has special demands on the enclosure, so you should focus on a dry terrain, which is supplemented with numerous elevations, meadows and slopes. This is the only way the fall sheep can hide from enemies.
In addition to the new animal species, there are the regions Norway and Mexico. The two countries let you set up the zoo in either a Scandinavian or a hot and dry design. Arctic animal species, such as reindeer & co., feel especially at home in Norway and benefit from the remoteness of nature. With a bit of luck, visitors can see the northern lights in the sky in the evening.
In Mexico, you can demonstrate your skills in a completely different way. Expand your zoo and provide it with snow and cold. Under the right conditions, even animals from the Arctic will feel at home in warm Mexico.
