What are mods?

The loot shooter Outriders has a sophisticated mod system. Modifiers improve equipment such as weapons and armor and give them additional, mostly passive properties. For example, some mods let guns fire bullets that regenerate life energy with every hit. Others improve the chance of a critical hit or give your weapon effective special abilities. In the following, we will show you how the mod system is structured and what you should pay attention to when changing mods.

Mods in Outriders can be found in weapons and armor from level "rare".

Where can I find mods in Outriders?

Mods in Outriders are not just lying around in the game world. You won't find them on the shelves of a merchant. To get mods in Outriders, you have to farm already modified weapons and armor or level up rare items. You can see which mods the found or upgraded items contain in the inventory menu under the attributes. How to farm epic and legendary weapons and armor in Outriders, you can read in the linked article.

Unlocked mods can be found in the crafting menu of Outriders

How do I unlock mods?

To access the individual mods, you will need to disassemble their carrier items. To do this, go to the inventory menu and select the desired weapon or armor. Disassembling them will give you resources and unlock the built-in mods. Free mods are stored in your mod library. Depending on the type, you can then use them as often as you like in other items and only pay a small fee in the form of iron (weapons) or leather (armor).

Attention: Only from item level "rare" on you can expect a mod when disassembling. Epic and legendary items then even contain two mod slots. The modifiers are also divided into different levels.

There are a total of three mod levels in Outriders. The higher the level, the better the buffs:

  • Level 1 mods can be found in rare, epic, and legendary weapons and armor
  • Level 2 mods can be found in epic and legendary weapons and armor
  • Level 3 mods can only be found in legendary weapons and armor

If you play multiple characters at the same time, you will need to unlock all mods for each character.

Which mod fits which item?

The compatibility of mods also has to do with the type and level. In Outriders, there are mods for weapons and armor. If you have a free weapon mod, you can put it into any weapon you want use. Armor mods are different: they are usually bound to the respective character class. If you play an Assassin in Outriders, you can only improve his armor with Assassin mods.

So when using mods, the following applies:

  • Weapon mods are universal
  • Level 1 armor mods are class specific
  • Level 2 Armor mods are universal in use
  • Level 3 Armor mods are partly universal and partly class-specific

Some mods support the abilities of specific classes in Outriders.

What do I have to consider when changing a mod?

Epic or legendary items can have up to two filled mod slots. However, you may only change one of these mods. The second one will then be automatically locked and stuck in that item forever. However, you can later overwrite the newly inserted mod in the unlocked slot with other mods at will.

You should also be careful when leveling up rare items: For example, if you change a mod in a rare item and then upgrade it to "Epic," it will receive a second mod slot. However, the mod in it will then be locked. You will only be able to swap out the mod from the slot that was already there when the item was Rare. So if you plan to level up an item to "Epic", leave the original mod in. After reaching the epic level, you then have the choice of which of the two mods you want to switch and which will be locked.
