WoW: Wrath of the Lichking Classic - 7 tips for the pre-patch

In this guide to the World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lichking Classic pre-patch, you will learn:

  • When to expect the pre-patch and expansion to begin
  • What you can do during the pre-patch
  • What you should do in WoW right now

Overview: When does Wrath of the Lichking Classic start?

To help you know exactly when the different stages of the preparation patch (also called pre-patch) will take place and when Wrath of the Lichking Classic will be released, here is a quick overview:

  • 31.August: pre-patch will be released
  • 6.-September 13: Zombie Plague begins
  • 13.September to Release: Scourge Invasion
  • 27.September 2022: Release of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lichking Classic

Level up your twinks - even before the pre-patch

Second or even third characters are not uncommon in World of Warcraft. As farm characters, for PvP or just for a change, twinks are perfect in case the "main" (the main character) is not doing so well anymore. However, they are much more difficult to level in WoW: Classic, because the leveling phase is much more time-consuming. Of course, you can relive all the old stories, but it gets a bit boring after the second or even third time.

Blizzard now wants to remedy this and makes leveling easier for you by increasing the XP you gain. The buff "Rushing Journeys" grants you 50 percent more experience through all activities until the release of Wrath of the Lichking Classic and is even active before the pre-patch.

The pre-patch is perfect for leveling twinks.

It even makes sense to start leveling now. Why? Because with the pre-patch Blizzard reduces the required experience points from level 60 to level 70 by about 30 percent. Therefore, play through the content from Vanilla Classic in order to start directly in Outland when the pre-patch is released. It is worthwhile to prepare several characters for Outland at once - provided you have enough time.

Caution: At the release of the pre-patch, there will be a big rush on the first quest areas of Outland, because the death knights will be released then. They start as early as level 55, and after their starting area, they'll be ready to head through the Dark Portal and make Outland unsafe. Our tip: Complete a few quests in areas on Azeroth first, and after the large mass of players have moved on, switch to Outland.

Every secondary character must go through the Dark Portal.

Plan the leveling phase in Wrath of the Lichking Classic

During the pre-patch, you should already plan which class you want to play in Wrath of the Lichking Classic and equip it accordingly.

For example, if you want to play a death knight, look for good plate armor and strong weapons during the pre-patch. The same goes for all other classes and their armor types. However, you will exchange many equipment items in the first areas ofWotlk Classic, so don't spend too much gold on better equipment.

Get good equipment - but don't spend too much gold!

Consumables like healing potions or buff food are always helpful during leveling. If you are an alchemist, you can make the potions and vials yourself, otherwise you will have to buy them in the auction house (or have them made by a friendly alchi). Here is a small overview of potions that will make your virtual life easier while leveling:

PotionEffect
First class healing potion / First class mana potionHeals you by 1,500 to 2,500 health / Restores 1,800 to 3,000 mana.
Vial of Relentless AttackIncreases attack power by 120 for two hours.
Vial of Pure DeathIncreases damage done by Shadow, Fire, and Frost spells by up to 80 for two hours.
Vial of Blinding LightIncreases damage done by Arcane, Holy, and Nature spells by up to 80 for two hours.

Since Cooking (buff food crafting profession) is a secondary profession, you can level it alongside your two main professions to keep yourself stocked with appropriate food. To do this, make the dishes that increase your main attribute.

Try out the new talents and skills

For the pre-patch, Blizzard is not only releasing the Death Knight and the Scourge Invasion event, but also revising the talent trees of all classes. This means that there will be new and modified talents that will greatly affect the damage of individual classes. For example, the Furor Warriors will get access to "Titan's Grip." The talent allows them to wield two two-handed weapons at the same time. So test out different skills and see which ones suit you best.

Try out the new talents.

Farm a golden nose

The most important tip is to get as much gold as possible before you start. You will need this World of Warcraft currency in large quantities in Wrath of the Lichking Classic. The dual talent specialization and the cold weather flight alone cost 1,000 gold each. If you want the Traveler's Tundra Mammoth (a mount with an integrated trader and repair option), you'll need to scrape together 16,000 gold.

The island around the Sunwell Plateau and its dailies are a good source of income.

Depending on your class, you will have different effective ways to get gold. If you play a class that does a lot of AoE damage, you can earn a lot of extra gold with farm runs in old dungeons (Stratholme, for example).

The daily quests on the island of Quel'danas are another source to generate a lot of gold quickly. This doesn't only apply to these quests - in general, you can complete all possible daily quests - up to the limit of 25 quests per day per character. If you have more than one level 70 character, you can complete the dailies with all of them. A nice side effect: You also gain reputation with the quests and can get better equipment from the faction trader if necessary.

Furthermore, you can farm reputation items for the two factions "Aldor" and "Seer". These grant you access to various epic items as well as the shoulder enchantments, which are very helpful for the first levels in Northrend. Additionally, you can also earn a lot of gold with the gathering and crafting professions in World of Warcraft Classic.

Collect reputation and get the rewards from the faction armor masters.

Level up your professions and the new Inscription profession

In order to level up your professions during the leveling phase in Wotlk Classic, use the time during the pre-patch to maximize your professions. You should make a plan of which professions are best for your class and which ones you want to cover with your twinks.

We recommendchoosing two crafting professions with your main character. Crafting professions grant you various bonuses in Wrath of the Lichking - for example, as a blacksmith you get additional sockets for gems, which in turn increase your attributes. Additionally, the new Inscription profession comes into play, allowing you to craft glyphs and more.

It's best to create a druid as your farm character. Due to his travel and flight form, he can mine herbs extremely quickly. This will provide your main character with resources.

Collect resources for your own professions or sell them in the auction house.

With the help of the gathering professions such as herbalism or mining, you can earn a golden nose during the pre-patch. As many players level up more characters to the maximum level and at the same time level up their crafting professions, the demand for resources increases significantly before the release of Wrath of the Lichking. This makes ores and herbs extremely valuable. If you farm them and then sell them in the auction house, you'll earn tons of gold.

At the same time, make sure you don't buy overpriced resources when leveling up your professions - watch the market and strike when you spot a low price. However, this requires patience.

The same goes for the crafting materials you get from the enemies of Outland. The "primal" items (primal fire, primal earth, etc.) will earn you a lot of gold in the auction house. For example, Primordial Fire is highly sought after and will usually bring you over ten gold per item (depending on the server). The best farming spots for Primordial Fire are in Nagrand at the Throne of Elements and in Hellfire Peninsula at Kil'jaeden's Throne.

Grab the Amani War Bear

With Wrath of the Lichking Classic, a few changes to The Burning Crusade content will also become active - most notably, the Armani War Bear will disappear from Zul'Aman. Get your hands on the fancy bear before the release.

Want a change of pace? Level up with the help of PvP!

If leveling through quests and dungeons is too boring for you, you can also level through PvP, more precisely through battlegrounds, since they now also grant experience points. This provides some variety and if you have a well-rehearsed group, you can level up extremely fast this way.

The whole thing is even accelerated if you participate in the appropriate battlegrounds during the "Call to Arms" event - the queues are very short here. By the way, the most efficient way to level up is to participate in "Call to Arms: Alterac Valley". There, in addition to victory or defeat, you'll receive additional experience points for each optional objective you complete (destroying towers or taking down faction bosses).

In addition to XP, you'll also farm honor in PvP. You save these points over the levels and can then spend them on a fancy mount. Or you can continue saving them during the leveling phase of Wotlk Classic and buy a powerful PvP equipment item for your class at level 80. Note, however, that you can accumulate a maximum of 57,000 honor.

There is still a lot of room for many honor points.
