Monster Hunter Rise: Online multiplayer on the Switch only with subscription

In order to play Monster Hunter Rise online on the Switch, you will need a membership to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Without the subscription, you won't be able to find groups and start co-op hunts over the Internet. Local multiplayer, which allows you to connect multiple Switch consoles in the same room, works without the service.

Monster Hunter Rise: Start multiplayer session

Your contact for multiplayer in all forms is the letter carrier Palico Senri in Kamura. He is located in the central square of the village, right at the foot of the stairs that lead to the Elder Fogen. Approach Senri to start online or local games. Monster Hunter Rise's co-op multiplayer works via a lobby system. This means that one player opens a camp, which is then joined by up to three other players.

Create an online camp

In Senri, select "Online Game" > "Create Camp." In the following menu, set which monsters you want to hunt, if you want to limit the group to certain hunter ranks, if only players with a certain language setting should be allowed, and if you want to assign a password - this is useful if only friends should be able to join your session. Click on "Create" at the end. Now you are in the lobby and other players can join you via the internet (more about joining in the next paragraph of this guide).

Create a local camp

On Senri, select "Local Game" > "Create Camp" to create a group that Monster Hunter Rise players in your immediate vicinity can join via the Switch's wireless connection. Select the option with the yellow lock in front of it to set a password for the lobby.

Your point of contact for social issues: Senri.

Monster Hunter Rise: Join a multiplayer session

To join a multiplayer camp online or locally, follow these steps:

Join Online Game

In Senri, select "Online Game" > "Search Camps." Set search criteria as desired, then click "Search". You will now be shown groups of random players from around the world that you can join.

If you want to join a specific group, you can do so by clicking "Search by Camp ID". Enter the camp ID given to you by the group's creator. To find out the camp ID of a group, press the [ ] key while in a lobby, scroll right on the menu to "Multiplayer" and then select "Roster".

As a third option, you can create groups using the friends list on the Nintendo Switch. To do so, select "Friends list" in Senri. Now you will see open groups of friends that you can join.

Join a local game

To join a local game, select "Local Game" > "Search Camp" on Senri. The Switch will now search for open groups within wireless range. Notice: In order for you to find your friends' games here, they must have previously created a local game camp on their console !

Whether online or local, you'll find what you're looking for at Senri.

How multiplayer quests & join requests work

Monster Hunter Rise has a two-part quest system: the so-called village quests are only playable solo, for multiplayer there are the site quests. To start a quest for you and your teammates, first open a camp at Senri. Then run to the site and talk to Minoto. Accept a quest from her. Now other players can join the group and you can complete the quest together.

You can join quests in progress or get help online via so-called join requests. (For those familiar with Monster Hunter World, this is the new name for the distress signal) You can join other hunters' quests by selecting "Answer join request" on the quest panel. Then you can choose which quest you want to join. The game will then search for quests of this type with an open join request and connect you.

If you started a site quest alone and want to open it for other players later, you can also do this with the joining requests. To do this, press the [ ] key during a quest to open the menu, scroll one position to the right to the "Quests" tab and then select "Accession request". Your game character will now send out an owl to fetch help. In concrete terms, this means that your quest will now appear to other players who respond to joining requests on the quest board. Important: This only works if you have previously switched to online mode, i.e. created a camp at Senri!

Only site quests can be played in multiplayer.

What else you should know about multiplayer

You now know how to start or join multiplayer rounds in Monster Hunter Rise. However, there are a few additional things you should know about multiplayer:

  • Higher level quests: You can theoretically join quests from friends that you're actually still too weak for. You get the loot, but the quests don't count in your game progress.
  • Scaling: The more players on a quest, the stronger the monsters.
  • Loot: Don't worry, you can't snatch items and monster parts from each other in multiplayer. All loot is instanced, so it is fully available to all participants in a hunt.
  • Awarding Likes: After completing a multiplayer hunt, you can give "thumbs up" to your fellow hunters. Use this feature if you had a good time. You can see how many times you've been positively rated yourself on your guild card ("Menu" > "Multiplayer" > "Guild Cards"). At Senri, under "Mutual Fans", you can see a list of players you have given a Like to and who have also given you a thumbs up. Maybe this is the beginning of a beautiful hunting friendship?
