What are addons and how do they work?

Addons are modifications that add (convenience) features to your game and improve your gaming experience. These programs are not provided by Blizzard, but by third parties. They are adapted to the World of Warcraft interface and programmed accordingly.

Are addons for WoW Classic prohibited?

Blizzard has explicitly allowed the use of these third-party programs. Those who use addons do not risk having theiraccounts banned. In individual cases, however, it can happen that the functions of individual utilities in WoW Classic are restricted by Blizzard, such as with the addon Classiclfg. In this case, a previous discussion of the community was decisive, in which the addon was criticized many times.

However, even the use of such addons does not lead to an account suspension. The developers will only adapt the technical interface of World of Warcraft, so that the functionality of the addon will no longer be available in WoW. The situation is different for executable programs that run alongside the game client and influence the gameplay, for example by automating actions. In this case, the use is not allowed and can lead to a blocking of your game account.

The largest platform for World of Warcraft addons is CurseForge. In addition to around 300 addons for WoW Classic, you can also find 6,800 other modifications for all other versions of the game. An alternative to CurseForge is Warcrafttavern. There you will find only the most common addons.

How to install addons in WoW Classic

Download the current version of the desired addon. Addons for World of Warcraft: Classic must be compatible with version 1.13 or 1.13.2. Usually addons are offered for download in a zip or rar file. You will need an appropriate program to unpack these file formats.

Unzip the file into the installation directory of the game, the exact path is: World of Warcraft/_classic_/Interface/AddOns. If the folder "AddOns" looks like the one in the picture, you only have to activate the installed addon in the game. Click on the button "Addons" in the character selection in the game. Put a check mark on the addon you want and activate it. This way you can also see which addon is outdated and needs an update.

If you find the manual installation too cumbersome, use the Twitch app for Windows and macOS. You can use it to set up and update all addons. You can use the search function or the "Get more addons" tab to find and install more addons. The Twitch app also accesses the addons from CurseForge.

MapCoords

Coordinates allow you to view and name your exact location. MapCoords determines the exact coordinates using the X and Y axis and offers you the possibility to see coordinates in the game. You can also scroll over the world map and minimap with the cursor and assign coordinates of NPCs to an exact location, for example.

Bagnon

While you normally have to open each bag individually, Bagnon merges your bags into one big bag. In addition, the Bagnon addon implements a search function in your bag view. Your bank compartments will also benefit from this bag f usion. On top of that, you can adjust the transparency of the bag window and change its position.

AtlasLootClassic

AtlasLootClassic is a handy database of almost every item in your game. If you want to know the drop chance of a certain item or see the possible loot of a raid boss, AtlasLootClassic is the right addon for you. You can also set up a favorites list to keep track of your desired items.

Bartender4

Bartender4 extends and customizes your interface. Hide the default interface with the Bartender4 addon and add up to ten action bars. There is also a bar for bags, an action bar for the pet and a bar for experience and reputation points. All the elements you add with Bartender4 can be changed in size, width and transparency. You can also assign shortcuts to any space in your bars.

Prat 3.0

The addon Prat 3.0 renews thechat window and brings many customization options. For example, you can assign a color to each class, so that the names of the players can be seen in the chat in the assigned class colors. You can also display the level of the player writing directly in the messages. Other options include a timestamp, copying links from the chat, and customizing the chat buttons and transparency of the chat.

Recount

ClassicThreatMeter

Another important addon is ClassicThreatMeter. It shows you the current threat of an enemy. Your enemies will always target the player who has built up the highest threat. Therefore, damage dealers and healers must try to have less threat than the tank. Tanks must keep track of the threat of all active enemies, otherwise their party members will be attacked. However, the addon only shows the threat of the players who also use this addon.

Questie

Based on your quest log, Questie adds corresponding icons to your map. This allows you to quickly see if there are any quests nearby. The addon also shows you where you can complete quests. So if you don't want to search around forever, Questie is indispensable.

Vendor Price

Vendor Price expands the tooltip and shows information about the selling price of an item at the vendor. This is especially useful for quest rewards, as the price difference of items is often several gold pieces. This also makes clearing out items easier.

Real Mob Health

In WoW Classic you don't get exact information about the remaining health of an enemy. Real Mob Health changes that and integrates an exact number into the health bar that corresponds to the remaining health of the creature. This works for both raid bosses and PvP players.

The addon detects your damage and calculates the remaining health points based on the change in the health bar. It also communicates with other players who are using the addon and exchanges collected data. This way you can see the health points of enemies you haven't fought yet.

What's Training?

With What's Training? your spellbook holds information about skills that the class teacher could teach you at that time. If you are in the depths of Tanaris, the addon will help you estimate whether it is worth the trip to the capital. The costs are also displayed in advance.

Immersion

Admittedly: The interface of World of Warcraft Classic is not one of the prettiest in the MMO world. Immersion improves the dialog display and brings it to a modern level. If you don't feel like reading the dialogs, you can also finish them faster with Immersion.

Auctioneer

World of Warcraft: Classic also brought the economy of the time into the modern era. Gold is scarce, which makes it even more important to sell existing items at a good price in the auction house. Auctioneer supports you in this and never lets you buy items overpriced again.

Auctioneer extends the standard interface of the auction house and adds another window to the tooltip of items. In this window you can see the selling price of the item in the auction house. This value is derived from the data that Auctioneer collects from the auction house. For more accurate values, you can instruct the addon to scan the entire auction house inventory.

Although the scan takes a few minutes, it provides reliable data on average prices of items if repeated regularly. This allows you to identify market fluctuations and better estimate whether an item could be sold at a later time for more profit.

The best addons for healers in WoW Classic

VuhDo

With the addon VuhDo you as a healer keep track of the raid or your group. VuhDo offers you its own interface, which you can customize. Each player in your group/raid is displayed as a small tile.

If you hold your cursor over a player, your healing spell will be cast directly on them. While VuhDo can be used as a standalone addon, its full impact comes in combination with the Clique addon.

Clique

With Clique you bind your abilities to your mouse buttons and keyboard. For example, you can set a healing spell to be cast when you press CTRL right mouse button.

If you apply this to the tiles of the addon VuhDo, you get the maximum out of both addons. This allows you to target the players who have the least amount of health. If you configure VuhDo to display negative effects such as curses or poisons, you can also remove these effects using the two addons.

The best addons for tanks in WoW Classic

OmniCC

The addon OmniCC visualizes the analog display of cooldowns to a digital display. In combination with Deadly Boss mods, tanks can, for example, plan the use of their most important abilities much better.
